Duncan Christian School Masterplan

Duncan, BC

Located in Duncan, BC, on the perimeter of the Cowichan Estuary, the Duncan Christian School (DSC) Masterplan draws inspiration from the flowing tributaries and mudflats of the 400-hectare estuarine ecosystem where the Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers meet the Salish Sea. The masterplan integrates a new high school building with the existing school buildings and landscape, recognizing that the site is not a blank slate. The landscape becomes the connecting framework, creating accessible and seamless circulation between old and new, with spaces to gather, learn, and connect distributed throughout the site.

In response to the site’s estuarine context and rising sea levels, new infrastructure is raised above the flood level. The resulting grade changes are integrated into the landscape to create varied gathering spaces while supporting stormwater management and habitat creation. Together, these interventions create a connected and adaptable campus that brings new and existing spaces together while responding to the changing landscape context.
