Squamish Nation North Shore Elder Centre Expansion

The Squamish Nation North Shore Elder Centre expansion builds on the site’s existing role as a place of gathering, growing, learning, and creating within the community. The landscape design is guided by Úxwumixw, a value identified in the Squamish Nation’s Generational Plan that describes a connection to Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Territory and a sense of where we live and belong. This connection is expressed through materiality, with logs and boulders sourced from Squamish Territory, and through the use of local native and culturally significant plants throughout the site.
The landscape is organized around the core purposes of the Elder Centre, creating spaces that support gathering and connection across generations. Stormwater is managed entirely on site, with 100% of stormwater absorbed and retained within the landscape. Together, these strategies reinforce the site’s connection to territory while supporting its continued role as a place for community, learning, and growth.
